Character Analysis
Jean is the wife of John Harlow and friend and neighbor to the Hazes. Humbert describes her as "handsome in a carved-Indian sort of way, with a burnt sienna complexion" (1.24.1). Jean is one of the few friends Charlotte and Humbert actually spend time with, for example, at Hourglass Lake. After Charlotte's death, Jean reveals a brief crush on Humbert (and kisses him), expressing the hope that they will meet again someday. She dies of cancer at a young age.
