Lolita Book 2, Chapter 31 Summary

  • On the way to Ramsdale from Coalmont, Humbert reflects on his "case" (2.31.1), particularly with respect to a priest he once knew in Quebec. The two used to discuss the existence of God and other religious questions.
  • He begins to experience deep guilt over the immorality of his relationship to Lolita and how he perpetrated his "foul lust" (2.31.1) on her. As he sees it, Humbert robbed Lolita of her childhood with his depravity.
