Common Core Standards

Grade 5

Reading RI.5.5

Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts.

This Common Core Standard asks students to take what they've learned in fourth grade (learning how to identify a text's organizational structure) and apply it to two or more pieces of writing. Now would be a good time to ask students why an author would choose to structure a text one way or another. For example, just imagine if cookbooks weren't ordered sequentially—baking would quickly jump up the list of public health hazards.
