[Dino and Coop singing]

00:13

Ring of fire.

00:16

Sounds scary, right? [Johnny Cash with fire in the background]

00:17

Well, no need to panic, because the ring of fire we're talking about isn't some sort of

00:21

WWE cage match, or even super extreme hula hooping… [People wrestling]

00:24

Nope, we're talking about the very first, original Ring of Fire: a chain of volcanoes

00:29

around the Pacific Ocean.

00:30

So…yeah, it's just a tad older than hula hoops are… [The ring of fire location shown on a map]

00:33

And believe it or not, many of those volcanoes are still active to this day… [Volcano erupting]

00:36

…Probably because of a healthy diet and regular exercise. [Box of Wheaties on a rock]

00:39

The Ring of Fire contains 452 total volcanoes – which is over 75% of the total volcanoes

00:45

in the world, and includes volcanoes in...

00:48

Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, [The locations shown on a map]

00:51

Russia, Japan, The Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, Antarctica, Canada, and

00:55

the U.S.A.

00:56

Phew.

00:57

That was exhausting.

00:58

And if you've ever visited the great state of Washington, you may have seen one of these

01:01

beauties in person!

01:02

But don't worry.

01:03

Mount Saint Helens last erupted in…2008…? [Kids walking to Mount St. Helens]

01:06

…huh.

01:07

Actually, that's…not super reassuring. [They run away]

01:09

And before that, it erupted on May 18th, 1980.

01:12

Here's what it looked like before…

01:14

Here's what it looked like during the eruption.

01:16

Pretty freaky, huh?

01:18

And finally, here's what it looked like afterwards.

01:20

Even worse than your living room after the time your little sister accidentally drank [Sisters kicks the TV over and jumps out the window]

01:23

coffee, huh?

01:24

What a day.

01:25

As you can probably tell, this eruption was no joke.

01:28

It caused over a billion dollars in damage, and tragically lost the lives of 57 people. [Newspaper article about the eruption]

01:33

Hawaii is another state within the Ring of Fire, and is currently home to several active

01:37

volcanoes, including Kilauea, Mauna Loa , and Loihi

01:41

Seamount.

01:42

Naturally, active volcanoes can cause problems wherever they are, and Hawaii is no different. [People at the beach]

01:47

After all, it's hard to enjoy your tropical paradise when lava is flowing from these volcanoes,

01:51

destroying roads and buildings. [Videos of volcano damage]

01:52

But on the islands of Hawaii, this lava also serves a positive purpose: when it flows into

01:57

the surrounding water, it cools down and turns into solid rock, effectively creating new

02:02

land and expanding the islands.

02:04

And hey, Hawaii is pretty beautiful!

02:06

Who could complain about having more of a good thing?

02:08

What's more, the volcanoes in Hawaii provide geothermal energy. [Coop pointing at a blackboard]

02:12

Geothermal energy is energy provided by heat from the earth – and it's both clean and

02:17

sustainable.

02:18

For all the destruction volcanoes can do, they sure can be useful.

02:21

So if there's one lesson to be learned from volcanoes, it's that while something might [People watching an eruption]

02:25

appear totally dangerous and destructive on the surface, it actually might have some surprising [Teddy bear flies out of an erupting volcano]

02:30

upsides, too.

02:31

Try to remember that the next time your little sister forgets to get decaf and is destroying

02:34

the house.
