Description:

Today we're learning all about visualizing and how it can help you remember things better. It can also torment you all night when you keep picturing broccoli escaping from the fridge to get you while you sleep. But we wouldn't mention that in the video. That'd be far too scary.

[Dino and Coop singing]

00:13

When you are listening to a story, what’s happening in your mind? [Kids sat in class]

00:17

Assuming you’re not, you know…hardly paying attention and instead daydreaming about playing

00:20

Pokemon Go?

00:21

Are you making mental pictures and imagining what is taking place in the story? [Girl reading a book and imagining]

00:25

If you are…then you are visualizing.

00:28

It’s an important reading strategy that helps you become a better reader. [Coop pointing at a blackboard]

00:31

So that, one day, you might be able to win the International Awesome Reader Olympics.

00:35

If that’s… ever a thing.

00:37

But…why is visualizing so important? [Guy holding on to books with a winners medal]

00:38

What’s in it for us?

00:39

Well, when we visualize, we’re taking the words we’re hearing or reading and creating

00:43

a mental picture in our head.

00:45

Doing that helps us understand the story on a deeper level… [Clown in front of a house]

00:47

…but it also reinforces and helps us remember what’s happening in the story. [Dino pointing at a blackboard]

00:51

Better understanding AND better memory?

00:53

We’re always game for a twofer.

00:55

So…how can we practice visualizing? [Coupon]

00:57

Here are some questions we can ask ourselves while we’re reading:

01:00

“Have I seen a place like this before in my life?

01:03

“Who does this character remind me of?” [Harry Potter]

01:05

“If I wanted to make a movie out of this book, who would I choose to be the main characters?”

01:08

“Where would I want to film this story?”

01:10

“Did I remember to brush my teeth this morning?” [Girl brushing her teeth in the mirror]

01:13

Not only are we visualizing while we read, we are also using our mental pictures to make

01:17

connections.

01:18

Visualizing is important when reading any book…

01:20

…but especially important when we’re reading longer chapter books that have few or no pictures… [Flicking pages through a book]

01:24

…where much of the work required to understand the book… takes place inside our head. [Girl walking to the ticket office]

01:28

Either that, or…we can just go see the movie version…
