[Coop and Dino singing]

00:13

Have you ever been taking notes and found yourself thinking, [Students in class and boy collapses]

00:16

“I wish this was a little more complicated?”

00:18

Okay, maybe that's not super realistic. But what if we told you that with just a little

00:23

bit more effort, your notes would be beautiful, organized, and way easier to study with?

00:30

That's where the exciting world of Cornell notes comes in! [Cornell University and person holds up page of notes]

00:32

…Okay, yeah, it still doesn't sound that exciting, but trust us, it's a handy trick

00:36

to know.

00:37

You can format your Cornell Notes in just a few simple steps.

00:41

First things first, create a small section on the top right of your paper. [Box on the top right of a page]

00:45

This is where you’ll write your name…

00:48

… the class… Let’s see… “Shmoop 101”.

00:50

… the period… is this fourth, or third…

00:53

… and the date, uh, well, that’s “Today.”

00:56

See, we’re already halfway done. Almost. [Completed section and thumbs up appears]

00:58

Now, make two slightly larger boxes under the one you just made.

01:02

The first of these boxes is where you write the topic or objective, which your teacher

01:06

will provide for you!

01:07

For now, let’s say the topic is going to be… Room Cleaning.

01:10

We know. We're wild and crazy.

01:12

The second large box at the top of the paper is where you’ll write your essential question.

01:16

Sometimes this will be provided for you…

01:18

… but sometimes you’ll have to make this up for yourself. If that’s the case, try [Teacher stood at front of class asking for essential question]

01:21

to keep the question focused on the topic.

01:23

So less “Why can't I go outside and play instead of doing this, ughhhh?” and more

01:28

“What are good cleaning techniques?”

01:30

Below your top boxes and about a third of the way in from the left margin, draw a vertical

01:35

line. [Vertical line appears on page]

01:36

This line is how you’ll separate the body of your notes from the questions that you’ll

01:39

later write and use to create your summary.

01:41

Okay, so let’s see… fold clothes… books on shelf… throw out old food…vacuum the [List of cleaning techniques]

01:48

cat…great.

01:48

That’s the body. As we go, we write down any questions we might have.

01:52

Remember, stick to the topic.

01:54

“Where can I find a broom if I’m not a witch?” isn’t the best question. “What’s

01:58

the best way to organize books?” is a pretty good question.

02:01

At the bottom of your page, leave about a two inch space. [Ruler appears at bottom of a page]

02:05

Later on, this is where you’ll go back and summarize your notes into a paragraph.

02:08

See, that wasn’t so bad, was it?

02:10

It was almost fun…almost as fun as playing outside! [Students walking out of class]

02:14

Why not stay in and clean that room instead?

02:17

…Hello? ….Hellooooo?....
