No, this isn't a terrible new mint-peach bubble gum flavor...though it does tend to leave a bad taste in people's mouths.

Description:

Speeches are much more than just talking at others. Now you'll know that before getting up in front of class and just wingin' it like we did. Fun (and related) fact: singing the Friends  theme song three times in a row, is not actually considered a "speech." Who knew?

[Coop and Dino singing]

00:13

If you haven’t already gotten “the speech,” you’re probably dreading it. [Girl watching video of elephants]

00:17

You know…the one where your parents sit you down to tell you about the birds and the

00:21

bees?

00:21

Yeah…those two have always been very into ornithology.

00:24

But…more generally…what is a speech? [Coop explaining what a speech is]

00:26

Basically, it’s any piece of writing that is read aloud, usually to a group of people.

00:32

Simple enough, right?

00:33

Usually, a speech is something you’ve planned ahead of time…

00:36

…and that you read to an audience at an event.

00:38

Writing a speech isn’t all that different from writing anything else, really.

00:41

Like all writing, speeches must connect with an audience... [Woman giving a speech]

00:43

…and put forward ideas...

00:46

…in a way your audience can understand.

00:48

In speeches, connecting with your audience and being clear is super-important. [Girl giving speech of impact of fracking]

00:51

Because the audience is listening to you, and doesn’t have the chance to go back and

00:56

re-read anything…they have to catch what you say the first time around.

01:00

Which is why speeches tend to use simple sentences…

01:02

…and more repetition than most writing. [Man stood on stage]

01:05

It helps the audience remember what you’ve said.

01:07

A major difference between a speech and a presentation is that a presentation is trying [Coop discussing differences of speech and presentation]

01:11

to inform while a speech is trying to persuade.

01:14

In other words, a speech is trying to get the audience to do or feel a specific thing.

01:19

Not to be confused with hypnosis. If you’re dangling a gold pocketwatch, that’s less [Person dangling pocketwatch in front of a woman]

01:23

a “speech” and more “mental manipulation”…
