Macheath, the hero, is a big jerk, but that doesn't mean that we like his antagonist, Peachum, all that much either. They're both jerks. But Peachum is the antagonist because he antagonizes Macheath; he plots his downfall—paying off prostitutes to report him to the cops, making sure he gets arrested, and the complaining when he gets off easy.
