How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from The Shawshank Redemption.
Quote #1
BROOKS: Jake says thanks. Fell out of his nest over by the plate shop. I'm lookin' after him till he's old enough to fly.
Who says a man and a crow can't have a deep, meaningful friendship? Jake may not say much; however, good luck choking back that tear when Brooks lets him go. The relationship may have a bit of a dependency aspect to it, but the love they have for one another gets us right in the feels.
Quote #2
RED: Yes, I think it would be fair to say I liked Andy from the start.
Talk about maximizing two characters' bonding time. There's no feeling-out period, no point at which Red and Andy aren't close. They bond immediately, which gives us about two hours to grow as close to the two of them as they grow to each other.
It also tells us that these two perceptive gentlemen instantly pick up on something in the other person that they recognize in themselves, something they can relate to. For Red, it's that Andy has that sense of hope he longs to recapture. For Andy…well, he's obviously just using Red for that rock hammer.
Quote #3
RED: Man likes to play chess. Let's get him some rocks.
It's one thing for Red to hook Andy up with items when they're requested directly. However, to go out of his way to give his friend a gift he knows he'll appreciate, without having been asked to do it, shows that he's taking some initiative in the relationship.
It probably helps, however, that what Andy really wants are rocks. That guy is really easy to shop for.
