Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, poem).
Given that students are about to leave elementary school, there will be much fewer illustrations or other visual elements alongside their readings. This standard addresses those visuals, asking students about why they were included and what they might be adding to what they're reading (even if it's there to be an "ooh, pretty picture" thing that breaks up the text), given that there must be a reason for visuals to be there now that they aren’t the norm anymore (like they were in the years before third grade).
