[Coop and Dino singing]

00:14

Poems are a very common form of a personal expression... [Coop discussing poems]

00:17

You can write a poem for expressing sadness over losing your pet fish...

00:20

…happiness over the beautiful world around you....

00:23

…love of another person... [Two skeletons in a park]

00:24

…or even love of sushi.

00:27

Seriously! [Sushi roll squashes skeleton]

00:27

Poems work in every scenario imaginable!

00:31

No one knew that better than famous poet Walt Whitman.

00:34

He covered a whole range of topics... including his home country, the United States.

00:39

Though we doubt he ever wrote a poem about sushi.

00:42

What a shame.

00:43

But who was this gloriously bearded fellow, anyway?

00:46

We're glad you asked!

00:47

…Seriously, we're glad…otherwise we made this whole video for nothing.. Girl standing beside a PC shmoop monitor]

00:51

Walt was born in New York in 1819.

00:54

Yeah, we know, he probably wasn't born with a beard, but we're leaving it there 'cause [Walt Whitman as a baby with a beard]

00:57

it looks funny.

00:58

By the age of 12, he fell in love with the art of printing, as well as all things reading,

01:03

books, and even writing.

01:04

And by 17, he was already a teacher in a one classroom schoolhouse. [Whitman teaching in a classroom]

01:07

We're assuming students sat on each other's shoulders, because geez does that sound cramped.

01:12

Walt taught for a few years there before deciding that instead of a teacher, he wanted to be

01:16

a journalist.

01:17

And so, just like that, he started his own newspaper: the Long-Islander. [Whitman's newspaper front cover page]

01:21

Y'know, because he was from Long Island.

01:24

Creative, huh?

01:25

After that, Whitman worked all over America for a bunch of different papers until eventually [Whitman travelling across America]

01:29

finding himself in New Orleans.

01:32

Throughout his travels, he experienced much of what was happening in the country at that

01:36

time, leading him to write that poem about America we mentioned.

01:39

It's called “I Hear America Singing," and it was kind of a big deal.

01:43

It's all about recognizing the work of regular, hard-working Americans.

01:47

The cashiers, the construction workers, the stay-at-home moms…

01:51

They're all important.

01:53

And their jobs might not be as glamorous as say…a famous Hollywood actor, but they're [Actress on the red carpet]

01:56

all super important in making the U.S. of A. the awesome place we know and love.

02:01

So yup!

02:02

Lots of American pride, and not one mention of every single person in America coming together

02:06

and singing “Old MacDonald Had A Farm” in unison. [Floating heads across the USA]

02:09

Not that….we ever thought…that was what it was about….*cough*

02:15

So if you're looking for a guy who will tell you, "yeah, I see you, and I appreciate all

02:19

the hard work you do for this country," you found him!

02:22

Oh, and never try to organize a nation-wide sing along of Old MacDonald….it never ends well… [Whitman sitting in a chair as people appear by the window]
