Here’s your shmoop du jour, brought to you by stress-dependent patterns.

00:08

“Stress-dependent patterns: more than just eating the entire pint of ice cream.”

00:13

Here we have a passage, along with two different viewpoints about the passage provided by scientists.

00:17

Go ahead and get acquainted.

00:24

Which of these potential answers is supported in both scientists’ viewpoints?

00:34

So, what’s this question really asking?

00:36

When you boil it down, we’ve got 2 scientists—one on Team Auxin, the other on Team Stress,

00:44

and we’re being asked which statement could align with both of their viewpoints.

00:48

Let’s go down the line and see what we can find out.

00:51

Option A simply says stress causes patterning.

00:54

Scientist 2 went off at length about exactly that, but Scientist 1 didn’t even say a

00:58

peep about stress. This isn’t the answer we’re looking for.

01:01

What about option B, which says auxin causes patterning?

01:05

Scientist 1 sure seems to think so, but Scientist 2 specifically said that’s not the case.

01:11

In fact, Scientist 2 specifically goes out of his way to say, “oh, nuh uh” at the auxin-only idea.

01:19

Hey pal, what did auxin ever do to you?

01:21

Moving on to option C, Scientist 1 spends a large portion of his passage

01:25

saying that auxin is present in the SAM.

01:28

And scientist 2 finished his viewpoint by saying the combination of auxin and mechanical

01:34

stress causes patterning.

01:36

This option looks pretty good, but let’s check option D to be sure.

01:40

Option D says “PIN 1 clustering is important.”

01:44

Well, we’re sure it is, but neither scientist mentioned this at all in his viewpoint.

01:48

We can toss that one out. And we’re left with C,

01:51

as in, “Come on…hug it out, you two.”
