It's a novel action for Edward to sit with someone outside of his family. That's probably because none of the Cullens ever invited a human to their lunch table. Edward is now opening up to a human and ending his voluntary isolation.

Edward thinks himself strange because he can read minds, but Bella is the one who feels isolated because he can't hear her voice. Here, we have two people, who have previously felt lonely and isolated, coming together.
