How we cite our quotes: (Chapter. Paragraph)
Quote #1
[Edward to Bella:] "Sometimes I have a problem with my temper, Bella." He was whispering, too, and as he stared out the window, his eyes narrowed into slits. "But it wouldn't be helpful for me to turn around and hunt down those…" (8.84)
Edward hates the men who tried to harm Bella. He had heard their thoughts and was tempted to kill them. It takes a lot of will power not to let his rage run wild.
Quote #2
[Edward to Bella:] "So [Carlisle] grew very hungry, and eventually weak. He strayed as far as he could from the human populace, recognizing that his willpower was weakening, too. For months he wandered by night, seeking the loneliest places, loathing himself." (16.28)
Edward speaks of how much Carlisle hated himself after he had become a vampire. We know Edward has had similar feelings – he considers himself to be a "monster" and is horrified by his bloodlust.
Quote #3
[Edward:] "But as time went on, I began to see the monster in my eyes." (16.82)
Edward tells Bella about the period of time during which he rebelled against Carlisle and preyed on humans. But he came to see himself as a "monster" – he hated what he had become. Eventually he went back to the Cullen diet.
