The Jungle Book Chapter 10 Summary

How It All Goes Down

Darzee's Chaunt

  • This "chaunt" (like a jaunty chant, we guess?) is "sung in honour of Rikki-tikki-tavi" (10.1).
  • Darzee describes Rikki-tikki-tavi as "the hunter with eyeballs of flame" (10.18) and "eyeballs of red" (10.24).
  • Basically it just goes on and on about how awesome Rikki-tikki-tavi is, while making it impossible for Rikki-tikki-tavi to actually accomplish anything, because a hunter needs silence to concentrate.
  • In the end, "the rest of the song is lost" (10.25), because Rikki-tikki-tavi tells Darzee to put a sock in it.
