- Franz continues his story:
- Dohmler accepts Nicole as a patient, but requires Devereux to stay away from Nicole for at least five years. They don’t hold out much hope for her, but writing to Dick and being under care seemed to work wonders.
- Franz asks Dick if anything in the letters would help them decide if she’s well enough to leave and Dick offers to bring the letters.
- He explains that he needed to brief Dick before he has further dealings with Nicole. Then he asks about Dick.
- Dick says his only plan is to be the best "psychologist" that he can - maybe even the best one ever. He’s been offered a job with a rival clinic but Franz advises him against it.
- He has lunch with Franz and his wife Kaethe, but finds it boring.
- He remembers thinking how he wanted to be an above average person. He hopes that he can find time for love, too.
