- Dick runs into Tommy in Munich and Tommy comments that Dick doesn’t look well. Dick doesn’t feel up for conversing with him.
- Tommy was with a prince he’d helped escape from Russia. Tommy also informs Dick that he read in the paper that Abe was "beaten to death" in a "speakeasy" (a place where liquor was sold during prohibition) in New York City. Dick is shocked.
- He goes back to his hotel and sleeps. When he wakes a parade of veterans are passing by his window, going to honor the graves of their dead.
- He feels so sad for Abe’s death and for his lost youth.
