These are two families referenced in the anecdotes that Henry and Mary tell during their discussion of girls being "out" in society. Henry and Mary agree that families really should be more clear about which of their daughters are "out" in society, or are old enough to meet single men and get married. Miss Anderson apparently underwent a total personality transplant when she was finally "out," which they found disturbing. And Henry made an fool of himself with the Sneyd family when he accidentally flirted with the younger sister who wasn't "out" in society yet.
