Queen Eleanor

The opening scenes of the play make it crystal clear that Eleanor is the power behind the throne—or, at least, that she plays a significant role in shaping how her son King John wields his power. When we receive word in Act IV that Eleanor is dead, it's a clear sign that King John's power is on the decline. Without his key mentor, he's practically helpless.
