Alan Grant

Alan Grant is an unlikely mentor. At the beginning of the movie, he hates children, but when he finds himself having to literally guide two snotty-nosed kids across an island infested with dinosaurs, he rises to the occasion. Both Tim and Lex idolize him. Tim because he's a fan of dinosaurs, and Lex because…well, we don't know why she likes Alan Grant so much.

Grant manages to not just protect the children (mostly…there is Tim's close call on the electric fence), but also to educate them a bit along the way. He explains the differences between carnivores and herbivores to Lex and encourages Tim to show off his dinosaur smarts by identifying the Gallimimus on his own. If Grant's job does get replaced by computers, he has a good career as a teacher ahead of him.
