Treaty of Ghent: Section 1: Introduction Summary

Goals and Shout-Outs

  • The Treaty states its purpose in the first line: to end the War of 1812 and create peace between the United States and Great Britain—represented by "His Britannic Majesty" (Intro.1), aka the king.
  • Naming names: the treaty lists all the "Plenipotentiaries" of the treaty. This means the people who executed, or signed, the Treaty. Among the gang is John Quincy Adams, a future president of the United States, and Henry Clay, Speaker of the House and one of the military-minded "War Hawks." http://collections.libraries.indiana.edu/warof1812/exhibits/show/warof1812/before/war-hawks.
  • After negotiating from their different positions, the group takes a break to watch Spinal Tap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOO5S4vxi0o, and decides to come up with eleven articles instead of the ten they originally planned.
