How we cite our quotes:
Quote #4
We want each one of you to show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope to the very end, so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (Hebrews 6:11-12, NRSV)
We desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (Hebrews 6:11-12, KJV)
Slugs are not listed as eligible to inherit the kingdom of God. Sorry, slugs.
Quote #5
When God made a promise to Abraham, because he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, saying, "I will surely bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise[…] We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul. (Hebrews 6:13-15, 19, NRSV)
When God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise[…] Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast. (Hebrews 6:13-15, 19, KJV)
Persevering for the faith isn't a new thing—folks were doing it way back in the day, too. Abraham trusted in God and was rewarded which a bunch of kids and grandkids; the author thinks that Christians are in for a much better gift than lots of rugrats running around.
Quote #6
Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:23-25, NRSV)
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. (Hebrews 10:23-25, KJV)
Christians don't need to do this all on their own; they can lean on each other if they need it. The author specifically wants his readers to help anyone who's lagging. Hey, let's all walk into Heaven together, okay?
