Character Analysis
Angelina Johnson is an older Gryffindor girl. She has taken over as Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team now that Oliver Wood has left the school to start his professional Quidditch career. She is just as harsh a taskmaster as Wood was, but she has a harder job than Wood ever did. First of all, Harry, her best player, keeps getting detentions that prevent him from coming to practice. Second, she's been trying to replace Wood with another Keeper but none of the prospects are fantastic. She chooses Ron as Keeper, but she tells Harry privately that "he's not fabulous" (13.264). And then everything really hits the fan.
After the first match between Gryffindor and Slytherin, when Harry, George, and Fred are all banned from playing Quidditch, Angelina finds herself with a Quidditch team missing a Seeker and both Beaters. She chooses Ginny Weasley to be Seeker, but she gets stuck with two pretty substandard Beaters (Jack Sloper and Andrew Kirke). In their game against Hufflepuff, Sloper manages to miss the Bludger "but [hits] Angelina in the mouth with his bat" (26.52). So Angelina is really having a rough time. Thanks to a loss to Slytherin and Ron managing to pull himself together for the final Gryffindor match against Ravenclaw, they still are able take the Quidditch Cup, which is a testament to Angelina's leadership against a lot of obstacles.
