Gustave might call him a "frightened little yellow-bellied coward" and a "swamp rat" with a "basic lack of moral fiber," but, to us, Serge X. seems like a pretty good guy.
Sure, he falsely testifies against Gustave, but only because his family's safety is at stake. He doesn't just cower behind his lie—he runs into the Zubrowkian Alps, meets our protagonists, and admits to wrongfully accusing Gustave of the murder of Madame D.
In fact, we learn throughout the film that Serge has quite a lot in common with Gustave. While they work at two very different establishments, they're both loyal to their friends and family, and detail-oriented to the point of obsession.
