How we cite our quotes: (Chapter:Verse)
Quote #7
For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. (NRVS 5:10-11)
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. (KJV 5:10-11)
And, of course, Christians can brag about what God has done for the world. After all, according to Paul (and the whole New Testament), Jesus's death made us right with God. That deserves some kudos.
Quote #8
If some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share the rich root of the olive tree, do not boast over the branches. If you do boast, remember that it is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you. You will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand only through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe. (NRSV 11:17-20)
If some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear. (KJV 11:17-20)
This one is for the Gentile-Christians. They're feeling mighty superior when it comes to the Jews who don't believe in Christ. But if they think they're better, Paul has a reminder for them. Those roots you're standing on right now? Yeah, those are Jewish roots, little branch. So who's feeling high and mighty now?
Quote #9
I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. (NRSV 12:3)
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. (KJV 11:3)
Sound advice from Paul. Let's keep those egos in check, everyone.
