Common Core Standards
Grade 5
Speaking and Listening SL.5.1
Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
This is an exact replica of the text used in the comparable fourth grade standard, so don't expect your students to be shocked when you ask them to work in groups. Because you'll be dealing with more complex topics befitting fifth graders, you'll still need to give individual attention to students to ensure that they are comfortable in a range of contexts.
