Common Core Standards

Grade 3

Reading RL.3.1

Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

It's time to ask more complicated who/what/where/when/why/how questions about stories. This standard's all about going beyond just the key details. In addition, students should be able to point to a specific place in a story when answering questions. Students don't have to be able to talk about anything they don't explicitly see in their texts yet—that's the job of fourth graders.
