Common Core Standards

Grade 2

Reading RI.2.2

Identify the main topic of a multiparagraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.

With this Common Core standard, students will be building on the skills learned in first grade by applying it to not one but two or more paragraphs. (Talk about a good deal.) A good way to connect outward from one paragraph to multiple would be to ask the student what the main topic of each paragraph is, and try to find some similarity there. For example, if the first paragraph is about Green Eggs and Ham, and the second is about The Cat in the Hat, then we can assume the main topic is about Dr. Seuss' books.
