Comic Books

00:09

a la Shmoop

00:12

Comic Books.

00:13

So, Deb, how are graphic novels relevant to us in mass media?

00:18

What does it mean? Give us a frame.

00:20

Graphic novels are awesome.

00:21

They've actually been around for a while.

00:23

Any comic book is really a graphic novel.

00:26

It's just becoming less of a taboo to like them.

00:29

[ cheering ]

00:31

You don't picture the guy in a sweatshirt and no pants

00:34

and kind of gross, hasn't showered in days.

00:37

[ eww ]

00:38

Now, everyone likes comics. They're turned into movies.

00:42

Superman, Spiderman, Batman, et cetera.

00:44

X-Men. They're all turned into big, huge movies that everyone loves.

00:48

And it's cool to like them.

00:50

The reason that we're talking about them in this course

00:52

is to make the point

00:54

that every medium is worth studying. So something like comic books,

00:58

which decades and decades ago,

01:00

everyone would've said, "Oh, it's just a hobby

01:02

for gross 14-year-old boys."

01:04

[ goofy laugh ]

01:06

Now, here we are

01:07

talking about it. And we actually have an entire course

01:10

on Shmoop on how to read comics.

01:11

It's now a very respected art form.

01:14

[ growl ]

01:16

But the idea is that

01:18

anything that is media, which is

01:21

almost everything around us, should be taken seriously,

01:24

because it majorly affects our culture, our society, and how we think about the world.

01:28

Got it. So, take it seriously.

01:30

Take it from Shmoop.

01:31

We'll see ya. Signing out.

01:34

[ whoop ]

01:35

How are graphic novels relevant in mass media?

01:41

[ impact ] [ groan ]
