Description:
You can learn pretty much all there is to know about a linear equation by checking its relationship status. Just keep your fingers crossed that it doesn’t say, "It’s complicated."

Solving Systems of Linear Equations, a la Shmoop.
- 00:09
Okay... let's take a second and get over the intimidating name...
- 00:14
...and start taking names and kicking some Math.
- 00:20
One of the simplest ways to think about Systems of Linear Equations is that they are all about
- 00:24
relationships. No... not like that one person in your grade

We mean numbers that can relate to each other. These relationships can be broken down into
- 00:39
simple parts. Let's think about the two brothers in the
- 00:44
latest Plumber Brothers video game. If Shmario...
- 00:49
... has stomped on the heads of twice the number of Shmoopas that his brother Shmuigi...
- 00:54
has smashed... ...AND...
- 00:56
...Shmuigi stomps on 9 more Shmoopas... ... he'll have jumped on twice as many Shmoopas
- 01:03
as his stout, red overall-sporting brother, Shmario.
- 01:08
If you use both of these relationships... ... you can figure out just how many Shmoopas
- 01:12
each brother has shmooshed already. All we do is substitute for one of the values.
- 01:18
Here we can see that R equals two times G. So we can replace the R in the second relationship
- 01:23
with 2 G. Now we have just one equation...
- 01:27
... and we can find G by using some good old subtraction and division.
- 01:46
Once we have G, we plug it back into the original... ... and we have our Shmoopa count.
- 01:54
As you can see, relationships can help us get to the bottom of this sibling rivalry.

Now on to Shmonic the Hedgehog...
