Do not go gentle into that good night…a la Shmoop.

00:07

I think there are three things we can all agree upon.

00:09

First…I don't care who you are or where you come from…if you're pulling toilet paper [Man looks angry]

00:13

under rather than over, you're wrong.

00:16

Second…Lucky Charms needs to produce a marshmallow-only option. [Girl sat with a bowl of marshmallows]

00:20

Seriously, those toasted oat pieces are harshing the magically delicious buzz. [Woman looks disgusted]

00:25

And third…death is not good.

00:27

It’s awful.

00:28

It’s mysterious.

00:29

It’s inevitable.

00:30

…Actually, when you put it like that, it kinda sounds like the Alvin and the Chipmunks

00:34

movie franchise.

00:35

And like Alvin and the Chipmunks, we’ve all been affected by it. [The Grim Reaper walking to 'Alvin and the Chipmunks The Squeakuel' at the theater]

00:38

I remember when my father was dying.

00:40

It was a really rough time for me. [Dylan Thomas in a hospital]

00:42

Every day was a countdown to never seeing him again. [Dylan crossing days off on a calendar]

00:44

He was old and sick, and the end was near.

00:46

So, what did I do?

00:47

Did I just sit back and cry while he withered away? [A tear runs down Dylan's face]

00:51

No!

00:52

…Well…a little.

00:53

Did I buy him a “get well” card with a picture of a wiener dog in a hospital gown [Dylan bringing the card to his father]

00:56

on the front?

00:58

No.

00:59

But now I wish I had.

01:00

That sounds doggone hilarious.

01:01

So what'd I actually do?

01:02

I wrote him a totally awesome, inspirational, pump-up poem. [Dylan writing at a desk]

01:05

It was sort of like Eye of the Tiger, except not as overplayed, and…a little more…deathy.

01:10

I basically said, "look old man…things aren’t looking so hot right now.

01:15

You’re sick.

01:16

You’re weak.

01:17

But are you just gonna take it?

01:18

Just lie down and die?

01:19

No way, Jose."

01:20

You can’t just fade weakly into that good night. [Dylan's father next to the Grim Reaper]

01:22

Psst….that good night is a metaphor for death…pretty good stuff, huh?

01:26

I told him to keep fighting, and get as much out of the day as possible. [Dylan's father wearing boxing gloves]

01:29

Look, we all know that death is inevitable.

01:31

But if we want to live up to our full potential, we can’t let that change our behavior.

01:35

That's why I told my pops to “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” [The lights go out]

01:39

It was kind of like that classic sports movie scene where the coach makes the player yell, [Coach talking to football players]

01:44

“I’m a champion!

01:45

I’m a champion!” over and over again until the viewer feels tinglies down their spine.

01:50

Anyway…it was heartbreaking, but I knew death would get my pops sooner or later.

01:54

I just wanted him to fight his hardest for as long as possible.

01:56

Because when you try your hardest everyday, there’s no losing. [Dylan with his father in a boxing ring]

02:00

Or…something like that.

02:01

I'm just paraphrasing sports movies, now.

02:03

So remember when people say ‘never give up on your dreams,’ that doesn’t mean [Girl asleep in bed]

02:07

they’re telling you to keep sleeping.

02:08

They’re telling you to keep on raging 'til you're in the ground.

02:11

Not a bad lesson, eh?

02:13

You taking notes there sports movies?
