Character Analysis

Marian is an early nemesis of Jack's, a large, loud woman with "arms as thick as a man's," (5.4). She and Jack hate each other, an "instinctive and mysterious" (5.5) dislike probably caused by the fact that Jack is a lying liar who gets away with too much by his mother. Wolff doesn't go too deeply into their dynamic, but it's clear that Marian has the last laugh by telling Dwight that Jack makes fun of him. "'Marian says you're quite the little performer.'" (10.30) We'd probably be a little more sympathetic to her if she weren't enacting her petty revenge on a twelve-year-old boy to a man who doesn't mind using his fists. Stay classy, Marian.
