This Boy's Life Part 4, Chapter 9 Summary

  • Dwight and Jack's mom fight about it when she gets home. Dwight agrees to get the rifle back, but never does.
  • Dwight and Jack's mom take Champion on a hunting trip. He gets lost and pees in the car.
  • One night, Champion scares Jack and Jack hits him with a mop. Champion cowers, and Jack soothes him. Champion becomes a loyal friend to Jack after that.
  • Jack takes the car and gets it stuck in the mud one night. A passerby gives he and Champion a ride home.
  • The next morning, Dwight confronts him about taking the car. And by "confronts," we mean "beats him silly."
  • Jack punches Dwight in the throat, which doesn't stop him.
  • Champion keeps killing neighborhood cats and eventually has to be put down.
  • Dwight drives Champ out into the woods and shoots him. Because he's Dwight, he doesn't bother burying him.
