The Sun is Also a Star Chapter 10: Irie: An Etymological History Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • The word irie has deep roots in the Rastafarian religion, meaning that everything is "all right" between you and God, and therefore it's also "all right" between you and the world.
  • Unfortunately, it's become a gimmick at Jamaican resorts, so the spiritual connotations are a bit watered down.
  • Natasha's dad used to avoid Jamaican slang at all costs, but ever since they found out they're being deported, everything is irie. The word annoys Natasha very much.
  • Natasha thinks about how her American life will fade, and that does not sound irie.
