At first, tons of people think that Madame Olenska is just a second Fanny Ring and is another mistress for Julian Beaufort.
But Miss Fanny Ring turns out to be more than a gold-digger. She's with Julian Beaufort until the end, and it’s her daughter who is eventually engaged to Newland Archer's son, Dallas. The fact that her daughter can marry someone in Dallas's position thirty years after the main events of The Age of Innocence shows how much chiller society has gotten.
