Box and Whisker Plots Examples

Draw a box and whisker plot for the following data. Don't think outside of the box and whisker on this one.

1.2, 0.3, 0.4, 1.3, 0.7, 2.1, 0.5, 2.3, 1.3, 1.4, 2.4

The data are out of order, so the first thing we do is order the list:

0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.7, 1.2, 1.3, 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 2.3, 2.4

The lowest value is 0.3, the highest value is 2.4, and the quartiles are:

Q₁ = 0.5
Q₂ = 1.3
Q₃ = 2.1

Now we draw our scale:

Next we find the lowest and highest values and the quartiles on the number line:

We connect the lines above the quartiles with a box, and finally draw the whiskers to the outermost points:

If we have time left over and want to make it look even prettier, we can pencil in some eyebrows.
