How we cite our quotes: (Chapter: Verse)
Quote #7
For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher […] Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. (2 Timothy 1:11, 13-14, NRSV)
Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher […] Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. (2 Timothy 1:11, 13-14, KJV)
More on the chain of command. First, the good news came from God; then, it was passed onto Paul; now, Paul's handed it off to Timothy. This special wisdom has to be protected though…from anyone who doesn't respect Paul and Timothy's authority.
Quote #8
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15, NRSV)
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV)
For the Pastor, authority is pretty closely tied to behavior. If you're acting Godly, then you'll be seen as Godly. Perception is a powerful thing.
Quote #9
I left you behind in Crete for this reason, so that you should put in order what remained to be done, and should appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. (Titus 1:5, NRSV)
For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee. (Titus 1:5, KJV)
Titus also has the Paul stamp of approval. He's been instructed on how to appoint leaders by the head honcho himself. And so church bureaucracy was born.
