  • Karen enters into a marriage of convenience with Bror, then moves to Africa with him to run a dairy farm, which turns out to be a coffee plantation.
  • Bror goes off and she gets settled, eventually heading off for a ride across the plains.
  • She meets Denys Finch Hatton.
  • The war starts and Bror goes off again, while Karen takes care of the farm and runs supplies to the war front.
  • She learns she has syphilis, and it's back to Denmark for scary arsenic-based treatment while Bror runs the farm.
  • She comes back later, with Africa turning modern (Bror picks her up in an automobile).
  • She builds a school for the natives, which Denys doesn't like. She ain't gonna budge, though.
