Character Role Analysis

Jo March

Although the novel is titled Little Women and there are four sisters, our primary focus is on the second-oldest girl, Jo. The omniscient narrator moves between the thoughts of most of the characters, but lingers most often in Jo's perspective. Jo often functions as an autobiographical stand-in for the author, and the love triangle between Jo, Laurie, and Prof. Bhaer is in many ways the center of the book. Plus, if you're ever not sure who the protagonist is, just look at the ending: the novel is wrapped up once Jo gets married and decides on a path in life.
