The Great Wide Sea Chapter 8 Summary

  • Ben's still off moping when dinnertime rolls around. Dad brings him a bowl of chili and starts going over the evening's plan.
  • Ben can't bring himself to eat the chili, so he dumps it into the ocean. His father is clearly irritated by this.
  • Gerry curls into a ball. He seems depressed. Dylan tries to point out some stars, but Ben's not having it. Gerry takes an interest, though.
  • Dad tells Ben and Gerry to go to sleep. Ben has a watch later on in the evening, and he needs to rest.
  • Soon enough, Dad is shaking Ben awake. Ben is super-tired. He's having trouble taking in his father's instructions.
  • On his watch, Ben falls asleep. He keeps dreaming about (or hallucinating?) someone falling off the boat.
  • He keeps drifting in and out of sleep. Looks like Ben isn't taking this watch very seriously.
