Gatsby, Obama, and Puff Daddy
A 2009 article in The Atlantic called "The End of White America?" compares recent anxieties about race in the Obama age to Tom Buchanan’s racism against minorities in the 1920s setting of The Great Gatsby. Wondering where Sean Combs fits in? The article’s author, Hua Hsu, also links the rise of hip-hop mogul Combs (a.k.a., Puff Daddy, among other aliases) to that of Jay Gatsby. Apparently, in 2001, Combs said to a London newspaper, “Have I read The Great Gatsby? I am the Great Gatsby.”
