Character Role Analysis

Jacques

There's not a lot of guidance going on in Giovanni's Room. All of the characters seem lost at sea. Yet in a way Jacques becomes a father figure for David and then Giovanni. He really does think that he is giving David the best advice when he tells him, "Love [Giovanni]. Love him and let him love you. Do you think anything else under heaven really matters?" (1.3.98). After David casts off Giovanni, Jacques is the one who takes Giovanni in and takes care of him. Of course, there are plenty of devious motives on Jacques's part, but unlike Guillaume he actually takes care of the boys that he courts.
