Character Analysis
Tungay is the caretaker of Salem House. He has a wooden leg. He absolutely hates all of the students and works as hard as he can to make their lives miserable. He is also firmly tied to Mr. Creakle: apparently, when Mr. Creakle was in trade before opening a school, Tungay worked for him. The boys believe that that is how Tungay lost his leg, which is why Mr. Creakle has hired him to work for Salem House. He's a small-scale bully but not too important to the story – a lot like Argus Filch in the Harry Potter novels.
