In fact, if you ask your students why America was founded—why people left Europe and traveled thousands of miles by ship, risking their lives to get to the New World—we bet one of their first answers will be: "They were facing persecution, and they wanted to be free to practice their religion." 

Maybe not in those exact words, but still.
