Chicago Scene 3 Summary

  • The cops arrive, and Roxie has already confessed to murder.
  • Oh wait, it wasn't Roxie who confessed! It was her husband, Amos, taking the fall, saying he shot a burglar.
  • With the cop's flashlight in her face, Roxie imagines his confession as a song… "a song of love and devotion."
  • It's a song called "Funny Honey."
  • "He loves me so, that funny honey of mine."
  • The fantasy of Roxie singing on a piano is interspersed with Amos giving his fake confession to the cop.
  • But then the cop says the name of the deceased is "Fred Casely."
  • And the jig is up! Amos says Roxie knows Fred. He's a furniture salesman.
  • The song changes tone, to Roxie singing about him being a "half-wit" and a "scummy, crummy, dummy hubby."
  • Back to reality: Amos and Roxie fight in front of the cop, she calls him a "disloyal husband," then she admits to the cop that she shot Fred, and that he was burgling her.
  • Without missing a beat, the cop delivers a line that only a movie cop can: "From what I hear, he's been burgling you three times a week for the last month."
  • The cop tells Roxie that Fred Casely has a wife and "five little Caselys," sending Roxie into a rage… and off to jail.
  • Outside, a photographer gets photos of Roxie as she's put in the paddy wagon.
  • Things aren't looking good for Roxie. This could be a hangin' offense.
