When Marsyas challenged the defendant (Apollo) to a music contest judged by the Muses, the defendant was deeply offended that a satyr would challenge a god. The Muses judged the defendant to be the winner of the contest, and the subject promptly flayed Marsyas, pinning his skin to a pine tree.
