How we cite our quotes: (Chapter.Paragraph)
Quote #1
My ancestor, and this is the inheritance she passed to me: freedom from the factions, and knowledge that my Divergent identity is more important than I could have known. (1.6)
This statement by Tris almost raises a nature vs. nurture question. Does Tris feel responsible for continuing the work of her ancestors because of genetics or because of the way she was raised by her own parents?
Quote #2
Sometimes I forget that Christina isn't like me, with no family loyalty to tie her to one place anymore. She has a mother and a little sister, both former Candor. (7.13)
Christina is pretty much the only character who still has a family, besides Uriah. She's an interesting contrast to Tris, whose parents are dead; Tobias, whose parents are jerks; and Cara, whose brother Tris killed.
Quote #3
Why do you care? I ask myself. [Marcus] betrayed you. He didn't try to stop your execution. (8.3)
Tobias only cares because Marcus is his father, and even then, he only barely cares. He didn't choose his father, and if he could, he'd probably choose a father who gave the tiniest little thought to him.
