How It All Goes Down
- Tobias still hasn't decided whether or not to watch his father's trial, and Tris still hasn't decided whether or not to look at her mother's journal.
- Tris also still hasn't decided whether or not to show Caleb the journal.
- Finally, Tris and Tobias decide to actually do something: they're going to go to the lab and have Matthew test their genes.
- Before they leave, George, Tori's brother, comes in. Cara starts to share the bad news, but Tris doesn't trust Cara's general tactlessness, so she tells George that Tori died defending them. That's a nice way of saying, "Your sister got shot in a gunfight near the fence, and her death served no actual purpose," which is probably what Cara would have said.
- Amar comes in right at this moment, gives George a big ol' bear hug, and leads him from the room.
- Tris and Tobias go see Matthew, and Tobias is instantly jealous because Matthew is a young man, not a crusty old geezer.
- On the way to the labs, Matthew reveals that the Bureau gave the city all the serums in the beginning. Shocking.
- In the lab, Tris wants to inject herself, because "I just don't like to be injected with strange substances" (18.84).
- Tris and Tobias are injected with microcomputers to analyze their genes, and they have to sit and wait while they comb through them.
- After an hour, the results come back. Tris's genes are healed. Tobias's aren't. He's not Divergent; he just looks like one. (In other words, he's a plot hole.)
- Tobias flips out over being damaged (which just makes him look more damaged, really) and storms out.
- Nita, the lab tech, pulls Tobias aside, saying she wants to talk to him later. Without Tris. He says okay.
