Lewis and Clark College

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Being green. I'm consistently ranked as one the greenest schools in the country, so if sustainability is your thing, I'm the place for you.

  • International Affairs, Environmental Studies, Biology, and Chemistry. These departments are all top-notch and will expand your mind to new horizons. What more could you ask for from your college experience?

  • Being outdoorsy. I'm not super well-known for my athletics programs, but I have some of the best whitewater kayakers, climbers, mountain bikers, skiers, and snowboarders around in my club sports program.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. Your own Kombucha mother. It's all about fermentation and hydration. Mmm, bacteria.

  2. A Carhartt beanie. I'm rainy for about half the year and umbrellas are not the Portland way. How else are you going to stay warm and dry?

  3. A vintage road bike or fixie. This is your best bet for getting around town, and is a great conversation starter with other hipsters around town.

  4. An opinion on fracking. Kale, not shale.

  5. Flannel. I recommend having a different one for each day of the week. You don't want to look too out of place.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • Fulbright. I'm one of the top schools for producing Fulbright Scholars with an acceptance rate higher than schools like Stanford, Yale, and Harvard. I'm just that awesome.

  • Monica Lewinsky. Former, uh, White House Intern and our most famous graduate.

  • Mt. Hood. If you find yourself in Portland and need to find an epic view of Mt. Hood, my campus is the place to go.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

  • House parties. What better way to kick back than in a cozy house surrounded by your best friends?

  • Forest parties. We're not afraid to get a little weird. This is Portland, after all.

  • Concerts around the city. Portland is an awesome city with a young population and awesome live music scene. Whether you want to catch a big act at the Rose Garden Arena or see an intimate coffee-shop performance, you can find it all in this truly awesome city.

  • Camping in the mountains or at the beach. The stunning Oregon coast and the rugged Pacific Northwest mountains are a short drive out of town, so weekend escapes are pretty common.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The Dovecote. My popular and super chill on-campus coffee shop.

  • South Campus Lawn. The go-to spot on one of my rare sunny days.

  • Narnia. All I can tell you is that this is a secret spot hidden on my campus. If you'd like to know more, you'll have to find out for yourself.

  • Kyra's Bake Shop. This is a gluten-free bakery that makes just about anything you can think of. This is Portland, remember? We're gluten-optional here.

Quirks:

  • If you hear someone talking about "boning," it doesn't mean what you think it means. In Lewis and Clark lingo, boning just means you're getting a meal at the campus dining hall.

  • My mascot, Pio the Newfoundland, is the same breed of dog that accompanied Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition to the West.

  • I have been a coeducational institution from the start, way back in 1867. I'm all about that gender equality.

Famous Alumni:

  • Monica Lewinsky. One of the central figures in a presidential scandal that rocked the nation back in the 1990's

  • Markie Post. A seasoned television actress from the 1980's and 1990's

  • Genevieve Gorder. A well-known interior designer and host for a couple HGTV shows

  • Becca Bernstein. An accomplished painter

  • Ever Carradine. Actress and member of Hollywood's prominent Carradine family
