Data Protection officer (DPO)
The European Union (EU) may be ahead of the game in trying to regulate the protection of personal data. In May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect that requires all companies that collect the personal data of EU citizens to designate a data protection officer (DPO). This person will oversee all data protection strategies and provide training to employees, conduct data security audits, maintain records and notify data subjects about how their information is being used and protected.
Europeans trust their governments to "do good things" with this data. Luckily, Europe has almost always been a politically stable place with little conflict and trustworthy governments.
Oh, wait. No. It's just the opposite.
